Endodontic Treatment (Root Canal Therapy)
Endodontic Treatment, which is more commonly known as root canal therapy is required when the pulp of a tooth develops into an infection or dies. Pulp is a soft tissue made up of nerves and blood vessels. This area can become infected when bacteria plagues the pulp. There are a few ways in which this can happen, including through a deep cavity, which permits bacteria through the enamel and dentin layers and directly into the tooth. On other occasions the pulp can die because of a fracture or a hit to the tooth. An infection like this can then travel through the tooth and the roots and into the jawbone, where it can dissolve the bone and form a painful abscess.
Signs of an infected tooth can include:
- Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
- Pain with biting or if you apply pressure
- A throbbing sensation or discomfort
- Swelling
- Bad taste in your mouth
- Or you might have no symptoms at all
Performing a root canal
At Rosalie Dental if we think root canal therapy might be required we will do a comprehensive examination, which might include x-rays. Each patient’s root canal treatment varies depending on the complexity of your particular case.
After a thorough review your dentist will cautiously remove the infected pulp from the tooth followed by a clean and disinfection of the area which is then sealed with a filling to prevent future infection.
If you are experiencing any of the above possible signs or pain, please contact one of our staff to arrange a consultation.
